2001 Romanee-Conti to lead single owner wine auction at $45,000

Sotheby's will offer a "remarkable" single owner wine collection on February 26 in London, starring six bottles of 2001 Romanee-Conti.

Chateau D'YQuem 1937
Romanee-Conti leads, but this Chateau d'Yquem from 1937 is the most exciting lot

The collection encompasses the finest offerings from Burgundy and Bordeaux over 11 decades, with the spectacular selection from the 2000 and 2001 vintages offering great investment opportunities.

The six-bottle lot of Romanee-Conti - Burgundy's most illustrious red - will sell with a £22,000-28,000 ($35,369-45,016) estimate.

Amassed through reputable UK wine merchants, the collection has been stored in a purpose built, temperature controlled cellar, before recently moving to professional storage.

The second highest bids of the sale are expected from a 12-bottle case of Chateau Petrus 2000, which is described by Sotheby's Serena Sutcliffe, master of wine, as having "an incredible 'Christmas pudding' bouquet of great richness and density." The lot is expected to sell for between £20,000 and £26,000 ($33,000-43,000).

A surprise offering comes in the form of 11 bottles of Chateau d'Yquem's 1937 vintage. According to Sutcliffe, the year was dry, though not very hot, resulting in a "deep glowing amber" colour with a "very smoky nose". Valued at £13,000-16,000 ($21,500-26,500), the bottles have received two new chateau capsules, yet retain nine of the original embossed capsules and the blue wartime glass.
