2013 Meursault-Genevrieres, Premier Cru makes $175,500 at Beaune

A barrel of 2013 Meursault-Genevrieres, Premier Cru, Cuvee Philippe le Bon made $175,549 at Christie's 153rd Hospices de Beaune auction in Beaune, France on November 17.

The proceeds of the white wine lot, designated beforehand as the "President's Barrel", will be divided up between two charities.

It was purchased by Yan Hong Cao - a Chinese businesswoman.

The sale takes place each year on the third weekend of November in the heart of the Burgundy region, and allows bidders from across the world to purchase fine wines by the barrel.

Other notable lots in the sale included a barrel of Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, which realised $95,175 against a $47,306 valuation - up 101%.

Anthony Hanson, Christie's senior wine consultant, commented: "Many records were broken at the 153rd Hospices de Beaune auction.

"Stars amongst the red wine Cuvées were the two Clos de la Roche Grands Crus, with an average price per barrel of €63,166 ($85,375).

"The Mazis-Chambertin and the three Cuvées of Corton Grands Crus registered major increases.

"Amongst the Grands Crus white highlights were the remarkable prices of Bâtard-Montrachet Dames de Flandres, Corton-Vergennes Paul Chanson and Corton-Charlemagne Roi Soleil.

"The latter two established all-time records. These magnificent results confirm the remarkable commitment and high standards of the Hospices de Beaune vignerons, and winery teams - who have together produced exceptional wines in 2013."
