Alex Ferguson's wine collection to auction at Christie's

Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is to auction his collection of fine wines at Christie's over three separate sales.

The first lots will be consigned in the May 24 auction in Hong Kong, then London on June 5, followed by an online only sale that will run between June 9-23.

Ferguson amassed his wine collection during his years at Manchester United

The collection consists of wine from 1986, the year Ferguson started at the club, to 2013 - when he retired. He would regularly invite visiting managers to enjoy a glass with him after the match.

Ferguson commented: "Taking an interest in wine allowed me to have an interest outside the game. You have to have outside interests to distract you from the intensity and the pressure you come under as a football manager.

"And all of a sudden, two or three years ago, when I'm going through the portfolio, we realise this has got to be an amazing amount of wine. I retired last year, and I thought this was a good time to sell it."

The majority of the lots are Burgundies from the DRC vineyard, a brand that has proven enormously popular among Asian buyers in recent years.

In November last year 12 bottles of DRC's 1978 Romanee-Conti broke the world record for a case of wine - achieving $477,000 at Christie's Hong Kong.
