'Memorable' Dalmore 50 year old leads Scotch whisky sale

Next week McTears is offering a typically impressive range of rare and collectible whiskies for a summer auction, and a grand total of 722 lots of Scotch single malts present everything from Balvenie to Springbank.

Some of the highlights include:

Glenlivet 50 year old

A Glenlivet 50-year-old, distilled in 1938 with its original box and stopper is certainly an attractive piece. Offered at £1600 - £2000 with a unique bottle shape and garish pink label, it was sealed for the Italian market by J G Smiths.

Distilled and bottled by Macallan Distillers Ltd, a bottle of Macallan Nicol's Nectar marks the retirement of the company's own Peter Nicol, on July 11 1996, and he is caricatured on the label raising a glass. The 46% single malt is listed at £900-1,300.

The key lot, however, must be the limited edition bottle of Dalmore 50-year-old. Number 59 of the series, it comes in its original box with scroll and key.

The Whisky Bible describes the 50-year-old as initially dominated by oak which then subsides to present a 'beautiful malt-cherry interplay' leading on to a 'faultless finish'. Overall it is a 'genuinely classy and memorable dram'.

The bottle, which must be well worthy of investment, is listed at £3200 - £4000 in the auction which takes place in Glasgow on August 18. Online bidding is available.
