Online bids close on limited Ardbeg 1974 whisky, next month

A lucky collector can get their hands on an historic Scottish bourbon, next month, when the Ardbeg 1974 appears for sale in Whiskyauction's online auction.

Filled on July 12, 1974, and bottled on August 31, 2006, only 126 bottles of the 1974 were ever produced. According to the tasting notes it boasts, for a bourbon, a notably smoky and oak-filled taste.

Bottled from cask number 3306 and part of the 1974's fourth release, the 32-year-old is being sold in its original black presentation box. Online bids currently stand at €1,305.

The Ardbeg 1974, bottled in 2006

For years, Ardbeg whiskies have been considered among the finest Scotch whiskies - indeed the best by noted expert Jim Murray, author of the definitive annual Whisky Bible.

Offerings by Ardbeg held the #1 spot in Murray's bible for three years; that is, until 2010, when the top spot was surprisingly awarded to a US whisky from the Buffalo Trace distillery, the Sazerac Rye.

The story was big news at the time: proof that the burgeoning global whisky markets had overtaken Scotland as the de facto producer of the world's finest whiskies.

Until 2010, Ardbeg held the #1 spot in expert Jim Murray's Whisky Bible

Nevertheless, the Ardbeg Supernova still holds the #2 spot in Murray's heart, and remains the 'smokiest dram ever made,' according to some.

For now, collectors have a chance to a chance to acquire a little bit of the Ardbeg magic themselves. Bidding on this bottle is set to close on September 4.
