'Queen's Cask' Bowmore whisky to beat $88,000?

A rare bottle of "Queen's Cask" 1980 Bowmore Single Malt Scotch Whisky auctions for charity this month.

It is only the sixth bottle of the prestigious whisky ever to be offered for auction.

It comes from a cask presented to the Queen when she visited Bowmore's Islay distillery in 1980 - her only official visit to a whisky distillery to date.

When the cask was bottled to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002, the 629 bottles were distributed throughout the royal palaces.

The MS Society has high hopes the bottle could make a substantial sum; one of the five previously auctioned sold for more than £60,000 ($88,000). This offering has a £10,000 ($14,675) reserve.

"We're incredibly grateful to have been given this bottle of whisky from the Queen's Cask," commented Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of the MS Society. "We want to use this amazing opportunity to raise as much as we can to fund multiple sclerosis research."

"More than 100,000 people are living with MS in the UK and it's an unpredictable and debilitating condition. We've already made important breakthroughs and we're now at the start of a generation of MS research that holds incredible promise. The money raised from this auction could make a huge difference."

The collectible whisky market continues to perform well. Last month, a bottle of the world's longest-matured whisky sold for £17,800 ($25,777).

The silent auctions ends on June 30. If you would like to take part, please email fiona.foulkes@mssociety.org.uk
