Romanee-Conti 1994 auctions for $17,500 at Bonhams

Two bottles of the 1994 vintage from Romanee-Conti shared the title of top lot in Bonhams' Fine and Rare Wines auction with a case of 1959 Chateau Latour.

The two bottles will likely prove to be a strong investment as they gradually deepen in flavour and intensity

Selling on July 11 in London, the two bottles of the coveted pinot noir made an impressive £11,500 ($17,383) - a price that was matched by 12 bottles of Chateau Latour's 1959 offering.

The 1994 Romanee-Conti is not among the most respected Burgundies during the early 1990s, yet DRC's offering has been described as a beautifully spicy wine with a floral nose.

Given their age, these two bottles will likely be left to mature by the new owner, gradually deepening in flavour and intensity.

The Chateau Latour 1959 is a highly respected vintage, which was given a score of 98/100 by Wine Spectator magazine. This Bordeaux had had over five decades to mature, so is ready to drink now, but will easily last another 20+ years as an investment bottle.

As always, the top vintages from Bordeaux dominated the sale, with a 12-bottle case of the 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild also bringing strong bids at £8,280 ($12,516).

The eighth decanter in the series is very rare indeed, titled Inedit or 'Unreleased'

A collection of Courvoisier Cognac Erte made a surprise appearance among the top selling lots, selling at £6,900 ($10,430).

The collection comprises eight decanters designed by art deco artist Erte, each of which contains a different blend of grande champagne cognacs representing a different aspect of the cognac making process: Vigne (Vine), Vendanges (Harvest), Vieillissement (Aging), L'Espirit du Cognac (The Spirit of Cognac), La Part des Anges (The Angel's Share) and Inedit (Unreleased).
