Springbank 1900 goes on offer at £6k

Mc Tears are presenting an impressive variety of rare and collectible whiskies this Wednesday February 3, starting from 10.30am.

The most intriguing lot, number 5, is a half-bottle sized sample of a Springbank which started its distillation in 1900. The sample was taken in 1927, and sealed with wax in a type of bottle not usually seen on sale.

In our interview with him last month, Bonhams' Head of Whisky, Martin Green noted older Springbanks as ones which will be increasingly difficult to get hold of as time goes by, so this is a particularly exciting opportunity at £4,000-6,000.

The sale offers a good selection of Ardbergs, Bowmore, Dalmore, Highland Park and Macallan single malts, alongside a few high quality Irish whiskies such as Dunville's Three Crowns circa 1930s and some Bushmills.

Of the Macallans, the prize lot is probably a bottle of 1938 Macallan in a wooden presentation case. The flavour of that year's distillation is particularly highly regarded with a distinct almond biscuit quality to it.

There will also be a 1964 Bowmore with a price of between £3200 and £4000.

The whiskies are already on show in Glasgow, where the auction takes place.
