Which collectible vintage wines should you be buying in 2011?

Armand Rousseau Chambertin 1993 is one vintage you may be hearing a lot of in the future.

The wine showed an 88% increase in price per bottle sales at auction during the second quarter of 2011, compared with the previous year, according to the latest figures from the Wine Spectator Auction Index.

At $2,448 per bottle, it is not quite up with the big hitters yet, but is nevertheless a positive sign at a time when the global Bordeaux market is displaying mixed messages.

Prices for 2000 Bordeaux were down 0.4% on a year earlier worldwide, while the 1995 vintage improved by 0.9%.

The second quarter has seen some notable moves in the vintage wine market

Writing on his website, wine expert Clive Coates calls the Armand Rousseau Chambertin 1993 "really quite classy and quite long on the plate," adding that the Bordeaux has "a splendid rich nose" and is "very seductive".

Other promising wines in second quarter auctions included the Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin Grande Cuvée 2000, up 137% to $610 a bottle, and the Opus One Napa Valley 1994, which increased by 32% to $233 a time.

John Kapon, from wine auctioneer Acker Merrall & Condit, is confident that the value of vintage wines will continue to grow, which is great news for those looking to sell in the near future.

"Consumers should realise that prices for older wines will continue to increase accordingly, as a new price reality sets in for the newest of releases," he told Wine Spectator.

Rest assured that Paul Fraser Collectibles will bring you news of all the key moves in the wine market over the coming months.
