Buddy Holly autograph on employment application form

    £795.00

    Buddy Holly Employment Application Form

    For Sale: £795.00

Rock and roll legend, Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley in 1936. His music is said to have inspired the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.

Holley signed to Decca Records in 1956. His name was misspelled “Holly” on the contract and Buddy adopted this misspelt version of his name for his music career.

Just four years after signing his first record contract, on February 3 1959, Buddy Holly died in a plane crash with fellow rock ‘n’ roll musicians Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. This date is often referred to as “The Day the Music Died”.

This is an application form for employment at The Texas & Texas Company measuring 11” x 8.5”. The form features some light staining and scuffing to the edges but otherwise in fantastic condition, especially considering its age.

Buddy Holly has printed his name “HOLLEY, CHARLES, BUDDY” in black ink but has failed to fill in any other information including position desired, address, details of education and practical experience.

Holly’s love of music was apparent from a very young age and at the age of just 5 he won a talent contest singing Have You Ever Gone Sailing (Down the River of Memories). It was most likely his aspirations of becoming a professional musician that prevented him from applying to this job.

An unusual piece of personal memorabilia from a pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll.

    Elvis Presley Twice-Signed Album

    £14,950.00

    • A highly rare Elvis Presley album signed twice by the King of Rock 'n' Roll
    • Gifted to a fellow member of his U.S Army unit during his military service in Germany

Elvis Presley (1935 – 1977) was one of the most iconic and influential performers of the 20th century, known to his fans simply as "The King".

As one of the originators of rock and roll, he created a music style which changed the world and inspired generations of artists from The Beatles to the present day.

He remains the best-selling solo artist of all-time, with estimated record sales of 600 million, and performed over numerous styles including rockabilly, pop, blues and gospel.

Throughout his career Presley also appeared in more than 30 feature films, along with the 1973 'Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite' special which was seen by more than 1 billion people around the world.

Today millions of fans flock from around the world to visit his former home of Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, and rare items of his memorabilia regularly sell for tens of thousands of dollars at auction.

'Elvis' was Presley's second studio album, released in the U.S in October 1956, and featured a mix of original songs, country ballads and Little Richard covers.

The record also featured a version of 'Old Shep' – the 1940s country song that Elvis had first performed in a Tupelo talent contest when he was just 10 years old.

The album spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Pop Albums chart, making Elvis the first recording artist to have their first two albums go straight to #1 in the same year.

Five months after the release of the album, Presley was inducted into the U.S Army. He was assigned to Company A of the 3rd Armored Division's 1st Medium Tank Battalion, and completed his basic training at Fort Hood, Texas before heading overseas.

This copy of the album was signed and inscribed by Elvis to a fellow member of the 3rd Armored Division whilst he was stationed in Friedberg, West Germany, and remained in the same family's collection for years.

The album bears Presley's signature in bold blue ink on the reverse of the album cover, and another inscribed "Many thanks! Elvis Presley" on the album's protective inner sleeve.

The album sleeve shows overall age wear, creases and scuffed edges/corners. The original vinyl record is still present within.

This record represents the first signed Elvis Presley album we've ever had the pleasure of offering at Paul Fraser Collectibles.

Bearing not one, but two bold signatures, it represents and superb opportunity and would take pride of place in any music fan's collection.

    Frank Sinatra Signed Set List

    £3,950.00

    • A signed set list from the concert Sinatra called "his finest hour"

Frank Sinatra (1915 – 1998) was one of the most iconic and influential performers of the 20th century.

Known to his fans as 'Ol' Blue Eyes', or simply ' The Voice', Sinatra has sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, making him amongst the biggest recording artists in music history.

He was also a renowned screen actor, winning an Academy Award for his role in From Here to Eternity, and starring in critically-acclaimed films such as The Man with the Golden Arm, The Manchurian Candidate and Guys and Dolls.

Sinatra was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Ronald Reagan in 1985, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1997.

In May 1970, Frank Sinatra returned to England for his first live appearances in eight years, backed by Count Basie and his Orchestra.

He performed two sold-out midnight shows at the Royal Festival Hall in London, in aid of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

In attendance were Princess Margaret, president of the charity, along with stars such as Peter Sellers, Michael Caine, Richard Attenborough and the cream of London society.

Those who witnessed the shows described them as a landmark moment in Sinatra's career – a view shared by Ol' Blue Eyes himself.

He later said in a radio interview that he felt the performances were "his finest hour", and was evidently frustrated that they had not been professionally recorded.

According to legend, Sinatra was so desperate for a copy of his performance that night that he personally wrote to the British Sinatra Music Society, asking if anyone had illegally recorded it.

He was apparently in luck, and one member of the society sent him a bootleg tape, receiving a gift from Sinatra in return as thanks.

The typed set-list lists the many classic songs Sinatra performed during the shows, such as 'Fly Me to the Moon', 'The Lady Is a Tramp', 'That's Life' and 'I've Got You Under my Skin', along with his show-stopping encore of 'My Way'.

The single-page list measures 8 x 10", and bears Sinatra's clear autograph in black ballpoint.

The set-list is accompanied by a letter related to the concerts, dated April 13, 1970, and the original mailing envelope.

A rare signed set-list from one of Frank Sinatra's greatest-ever live performances.

The collection includes correspondence between promoter Don Arden (1926-2007) and F. K. Cowley, the entertainments manager at Colston Hall.

In the earliest letter, dated 24 January 1962, Arden asks Cowley to remind him if Cowley has reserved May 8th or May 11th for him.

In a letter dated 16th February 1962, Cowley states that he has included “the usual form of agreement in respect of the Jerry Lee Lewis show on the 8th May”.

In a letter dated 1st March 1962, Arden informs Cowley that he is returning the “agreement in respect of the Jerry Lee Lewis Show on May 8th together with a cheque for £19.13.9d as a deposit”.

Arden asks Cowley to add Jess Conrad as co-star to Brenda Lee in a concert on April 13 in a letter dated 9th March 1962.

In a letter dated 9th April 1962 and typed on Colston Hall headed paper, Cowley tells Arden that he thinks that “Gene Vincent may attract some business if you put him in the Jerry Lee Lewis Bill”.

On 10th April 1962 Arden replies informing Cowley that he has definitely decided to put Gene Vincent on the Jerry Lee Lewis bill.

An undated compliments slip from Cowley to Arden reads “A request for payment of balance due has been forwarded to the City Treasurer”.

The collection also features a 12½” x 8” Performance Statement which gives details of expenditure and income and 2 Performance Return forms which give details of how many tickets were sold for each performance. These forms are all signed by Cowley.

A note on the page says “This is a specimen sheet only the details are not correct”.

Jimi Hendrix owned and worn scarf

    £6,500.00

A scarf owned and worn by one of the most iconic figures in music history

Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970) is one of the most important musicians of the 20th century, and is regarded by many as the greatest guitarist of all time.

Described by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music", Hendrix's music continues to influence generations of musicians almost 50 years after it was recorded.

He became one of the most famous figures of the 1960s counterculture movement, and his performance of The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock remains one of the most defining moments in American pop culture history.

In addition to his skills as a musician and songwriter, Hendrix also became known for his colourful style, which perfectly captured the flamboyant spirit and energy of the late 1960s.

Today Jimi Hendrix memorabilia is amongst the most sought-after by music fans and collectors around the world, with his instruments, clothing and signed artifacts regularly selling for huge sums at auction.

Herbert Worthington (1944 – 2013) was a rock and roll photographer renowned for his work with Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks.

Worthington famously took the cover photograph for the band's seminal 1977 album Rumours, along with creating the covers for Nicks' first two solo albums Bella Donna and The Wild Heart.

Prior to his career as a photographer, Worthington was a much-loved character in the Los Angeles music scene, and shared an apartment with musician Buddy Miles.

Miles was a close friend of Jimi Hendrix, and a member of his short-lived backing group Band of Gypsys, who performed with Hendrix at his legendary Woodstock appearance.

Miles initially introduced Hendrix to his former house mate in 1969, and they quickly struck up a strong friendship, with Worthington often travelling with Jimi as he toured the U.S.

They famously dropped acid together just before a show at the Denver Pop Festival in June 1969 – which turned out to be the last time the original Jimi Hendrix Experience line-up would ever perform together.

The friends were also known to swap clothing and jewelry with each other, and Jimi gifted Worthington this scarf, which remained in his personal collection for more than 30 years until he passed away in November 2013.

John Lennon Autograph on Customs Declaration

    For Sale: £7,950.00

    • Boldly signed by John Lennon - the most collectible Beatle
    • A remarkable record of his last trip outside of the United States, signed in July 1980 - four months before he was tragically assassinated
    • Includes Lennon's personal details and New York address
    • Accompanied by photographs of the star in Bermuda

John Lennon (1940-1980) was a leading member of The Beatles, the most successful pop group in history. Forming an incredible songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney, he penned some of the band's most famous hits, before going on to hold the most successful solo career following their split.

Ranked 8th in the BBC's 100 Greatest Britons list, and the fifth greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, his enduring legacy continues to fascinate fans across the world. As a result, he is by far the most collectible Beatle, with his memorabilia achieving outstanding prices.

    Description

This signed United States Customs Declaration, measuring 4" x 8½", was completed by Lennon less than four months before he died. Returning from a two month vacation in Bermuda in 28 July 1980, this was Lennon's last journey outside of the United States.

The singer's personal details are listed: full name, date of birth, countries of residence, address, flight details, date of citizenship, and note that he is travelling with his son, Sean. His signature, written in capital letters, is also prominent.

A list of purchases from Bermuda is also handwritten on the official slip. T-shirts, pants, shirts and a hand bag are among the items bought while travelling. The most expensive item, a commissioned painting of the singer and his son, is valued at $6,000.

The page is in fine condition, with some handling wear and ink cancellation strokes lightly touching Lennon's information. Some minor surface impressions from Lennon's declaration on the reverse. Identical forms filled in by Lennon's assistants who accompanied him on the trip, Fred Seaman and Uda Uneko, are included.

These documents are accompanied by: two reprinted photos of Lennon in Bermuda; and one reprinted photo of the painting of John and Sean Lennon on the beach, hung over a piano.

    Background

At 8pm on June 4, the former Beatle boarded a 43ft sloop called Megan Jaye at Newport, Rhode Island, and set sail for the idyllic Bermuda. He was joined later by his four year old "Beautiful Boy" Sean.

While in Bermuda with son Sean, Lennon visited the botanical gardens and saw the freesia hybrid flower Double Fantasy, the name of which he would borrow for his next release. It was while in Bermuda that he wrote Woman and Cleanup Time, both of which were included on the Double Fantasy album.

The declaration reveals more about this fascinating period in Lennon's life, which has since been recorded Scott Neil's book Lennon Bermuda and is seen as a very happy time for the singer.

Through the details on the form we can reveal that Lennon's voyage was hastily planned, with the declaration recording his purchase of shorts and t-shirts while in Bermuda.

Lennon also bought a handbag, presumably a gift for his wife Yoko Ono, who he is said to have missed immenseley while away. Woman, a song written in response from a telephone call he received in Bermuda, contains the line "So let me tell you again and again and again, I love you now and forever" - a sign of their happiness at this point.

The declaration also reveals Lennon's love for his son Sean, with a $6,000 painting commissioned to immortalise their time together. A photograph of the painting accompanies the form.

    Original Pontins May Ball Poster

    For Sale: £950.00

    • A rare original poster for the Pontins May Ball in 1968
    • Stars The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Jimmy James and the Vagabonds and Rod Mason's Jazzband
    • A superb piece of memorabilia from the heyday of the great British holiday

Founded by Fred Pontin in 1946, Pontin's was a major holiday operator within the UK throughout the 1960s. At its peak it had about 20 resorts throughout Europe. Pontins offered its guests lodgings, catering, entertainment and the chance to cheaply go abroad on one of its "Pontinental holidays".

Numerous entertainers performed, and continue to perform, at its resorts. Best known for his 1968 hit "Fire", the flamboyant singer Arthur Brown was hugely popular in the 1960s. "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" was both the title of his 1968 album and that of his band. His appearance at Pontins was likely in support of this album.

A colourful poster from 1968 details the headline act and supporting acts at Pontin's May Ball concert:

May Ball. May 1st, 8.00-3am, Pontins, Torquay. Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, Rod Masons Jazzband, Maurice Price and his Orchestra. Film King Kong, plus others. Buffet. Light Show. Original or formal dress. Nightingales Graded Grains. Pigmeat Revival. Tickets from Dave Jaffa S.D.T.C. , John Conway, Abbey Road. Two Ballrooms. In aid of charity. Draw. Pontinental holiday for two.

Barton Hall was Pontin's upmarket Torquay site and served as one of its popular chalet hotels. Bought in 1957, it was the flagship of Pontin's holiday empire.

The strong outlines of an upwardly-gazing face are framed by the text "May Ball" in blue and red, which form the figure's hair. The neck and upper torso are composed of shaped lines of text; curved, arched and angled to fit the unusual design. The use of primary colours is accented by black and green.

    • One of only 8-10 known to exist according to Autograph Magazine's census
    • Signed clearly by all four members of the band beneath their portraits
    • Superb condition with only light wear to the edges and some toning

The Beatles and their music need no introduction. As a result of their all-encompassing impact on popular music and culture, memorabilia from the band is some of the most valuable on the market.

A Hard Day's Night, released on July 10, 1964 was the Beatles' third studio album. Accompanying the band's film of the same name, it went straight to Number One in the UK charts and stayed there for 21 weeks, spending a total of 38 weeks in the Top 20.

A Hard Day's Night saw the Beatles move away from rock n roll covers and towards their classic pop sound. It holds a special place with fans, as it is the only Beatles album where all the songs were written by both John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

According the Autograph Magazine's census, there are just 125 known UK-release album covers signed by all four members of The Beatles.

Signed copies of Please Please Me and With the Beatles account for approximately 95 of the 125 known examples.

That takes the total down to just 30.

There are only 5 known examples of Meet the Beatles. The last copy to appear at auction sold for $115,000 in 2006.

As for signed copies of A Hard Days Night; only 8-10 are known to exist.

    This is one of them...

The signatures are marked in blue pen, each inscribed below the corresponding band member's photograph.

The item is in fine condition, with some light wear to the edges.

The album cover is to be sold framed alongside a black and white photo of the group, with a certificate of authenticity and lifetime guarantee.

This is a very rare opportunity to acquire one of the rarest pieces of Beatles memorabilia.
