    Judy Garland Autograph on Photograph

    For Sale: £1,500.00

    • A fantastic signed photograph of a young Judy Garland - "the greatest entertainer who ever lived"

American actress Judy Garland (1922-1969) is best remembered for her role as Dorothy in 1939's The Wizard of Oz, in which she sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow. A childhood star, she went on the become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and was described by Fred Astaire as "the greatest entertainer who ever lived". Her memorabilia, especially items from her youth, is extremely collectible, fuelled by high demand caused by her early death.

This 10" x 8" photograph of a young Garland is signed: "To Dick - Best wishes always, Judy". The autograph is placed in a clear space of the photo, written in fluid black ink.

The image shows Garland in a calf-length double-breasted overcoat, tucked-in scarf, white socks, black flat shoes and broad-brimmed hat. The hat is secured with a ribbon, which Garland holds playfully with her thumb. Neat tendrils of curls cascade from underneath the hat. The actress' direct gaze and lack of background detail makes her the absolute focus of the photograph.

The photograph is in excellent condition, with minor surface creases and light smudging.

EH Shepard Autographed Drawing for Punch Magazine

    For Sale: £5,950.00

    • Satirical illustration from E H Shepard
    • Original artwork signed by the artist
    • Originates from the Shepard family's own holding

Ernest Howard "EH" Shepard (1879-1976) was a popular cartoonist, perhaps most famous for his illustrations of Winnie the Pooh in the famous books by A.A. Milne. He is also known for bringing to life the characters in Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows.

Shepard famously regretted illustrating Winnie the Pooh, as he felt it overshadowed his work as a political cartoonist.

The artist worked as a cartoonist for Punch magazine from 1921 until 1953, and his work is often thought of as somewhat gentle and uplifting. Fellow cartoonist John Jenson once said "Shepard moved from strength to strength, increasingly able to impose his quiet humour on otherwise grim and humourless topics."

    Description

This original, signed drawing measures 8¼" x 7¾" and is mounted to an overall size of 15" x 15".

The ink drawing, which is extremely detailed, shows Mr Punch standing is his living room which is adorned with Christmas holly. Mr Punch is holding a copy of a newspaper whose headline reads "COAL DISPUTE" and looking at Toby the dog who is holding an empty scuttle and pointing to the small amount of coal on the fire.

EH Shepard has autographed the original drawing in the bottom left hand corner.

The drawing is a reference to the dispute that resulted from the Coal Mines Reorganisation Commission's proposal to regulate the production and supply of coal, and merge small mines.

Headed "VOLUME CXC", it is thought that this particular drawing was used as the front cover of the volume of Punch magazine January to June 1936.

This rare piece comes from the Shepard family's own holding.

This is a delightfully detailed piece of cartoon art from one of the world's best loved illustrators.

    E H Shepard market

Sotheby's December 2012 auction of the Michael Winner collection realised $1.8m, with the world record for E H Shepard's work set at $224,505 by a fantastic early depiction of Pooh with Christopher Robin.

As a result of the sale and the huge media attention it garnered, the market for E H Shepard's drawings has never been stronger. However, the current popularity of Shepard's work has resulted in the market being awash with counterfeits. All of our items are sold with a Free Lifetime Moneyback Guarantee.

    • Fantastic historical pamphlet signed by Mark Twain - America's great novelist
    • Unusually long inscription with a bold, clear signature in Twain's flourishing hand
    • Signed during the Jamestown Exposition of 1907 - an important event celebrating the first permanent English settlement in the US.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), more famously known by his pen name Mark Twain, was a prolific and well respected American author.

Noted and admired for his keen wit and satirical skills, he has been described as the "greatest American humorist of his age", with William Faulkner describing him as "the father of American literature".

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) are his most famous published works, which have become known as the very definition of the "Great American Novel".

    Description

This celebratory pamphlet and menu is signed on the cover by Twain in fine brown/black ink. His inscription reads:

"To Mrs. Hugh Gordon Miller, With The affectionate & grateful remembrances of Mark Twain. James Town Exposition, September 24/07. (The day after the struggle)."

As indicated in Twain's inscription, the piece was signed during the famous Jamestown Exposition of 1907, which was one of many world's fairs and exposition held in the US during the early part of the 20th century.

Measuring 10" x 8", the pamphlet celebrates "The First Hudson River Steamboat, Robert Fulton's "Clermont", 1807-1907".

Inside, printed text highlights the historic importance of the vessel and its context. A red, white and blue ribbon ties the pages and cover together.

The Clermont was the first Steamboat to make a voyage of any significant distance, journeying between New York and Albany in 1807. September 23, 1907 was dedicated to the celebration of the centennial of the steamboat and named Fulton Day at the exposition.

Mark Twain was in attendance as a founding member of the Robert Fulton Monument Association and sailed to the exposition aboard the yacht Kanawha, much to the appreciation of the gathered crowds.

Passengers on board a steamboat were in such a panic to catch a glimpse of the writer, who had already achieved considerable fame at this stage, that they gathered on the starboard side of the vessel and caused it to careen toward's Twain's yacht.

"The struggle", noted in Twain's inscription, refers to the disasterous weather that struck on Fulton Day, which almost brought the three-mile long marine parade festivities to a standstill.

Click here see a photograph of Mark Twain with Mr and Mrs Hugh G Miller, to whom the piece is made out, at the event.

The item is in excellent condition, with some light toning.

Rev. Dresser sold the home to Lincoln in 1844 for $1500. In the mid 1850s, the home was raised to a full story residence with the Lincolns' bedroom located at the north of the second floor.

Future custodians of the house included Mrs Lincoln's nephew, Albert S. Edwards and his wife Mrs Mary Edwards Brown.

Oliver Hardy was an American comedian and acotor, most famous for being one half of the popular comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy. One of the most popular comedians of all time, and a central figure in the highly collectible Hollywood silent era, any item from Oliver Hardy is coveted by collectors.

This 28 page softbound copy of California Supreme Court Case #13874 has been signed by Hardy in black ink on the top right hand corner of the front cover.

The document, which features some light toning and handling wear, covers Hardy's ex-wife's follow-up suit for more alimony following their divorce. Within the document, Myrtle Lee Hardy (who divorced Hardy in 1936) claims that Oliver had fallen short on the yearly payments that had been agreed upon in the original divorce case.

The judge concluded that Hardy was not liable for any additional alimony. Just a few years later, Hardy fell in love with script girl Virginia Lucille Jones, and they were happily married until his death in 1956.

An excellent document providing an insight into the private life of one of America's best loved comedians.

A fine pen drawing of Charlie Chaplin by Ralph Steadman

    For Sale: £2,500

Ralph Steadman (1936 - ) is a British artist & cartoonist best known for his work with American author Hunter S Thompson, illustrating both Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Loathing on the Campaign trail '72.

Their 40 year friendship included coverage of the Watergate Scandals and numerous articles in Rolling Stone magazine for which Steadman still holds the position of Gardening Correspondent.

Through his relationship with Thompson, Steadman has become a hero of America's counter culture and a godfather of 'Gonzo' journalism, making their readers look at the world through the same "skewed, booze sodden, drug-addled prism"

Steadman has also illustrated classics such as Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland (for which he won the Francis Williams Illustration Award) and Robert Lewis Stevenson's Treasure Island.

He is also a prolific artist who has produced thousands of groundbreaking and influential artworks over his 40 year career.

This 18½ x 11cm white card features an original pen drawing of Charlie Chaplin by Ralph Steadman. Steadman has signed and dated the piece "2009". The piece is quintessentially Steadman with long sharp pen strokes.

Why Chaplin? In 1999 Steadman was commissioned by the Royal Mail to produce a design for a 64p Charlie Chaplin postage stamp for a series of stamps titled 'Entertainers'. Others in the series included a 19p featuring Freddie Mercury by Peter Blake a 26p featuring Bobby Moore by M White, and a 44p Dalek (Doctor Who) by Lord Snowden.

Steadman's works are increasingly popular with collectors. A limited edition print, one of 65, sold for $4,000 way back in 2004. 11 years on we are asking just £2,500 ($3,875) for this ORIGINAL artwork.

A great opportunity for a fan of Gonzo journalism, an art collector, or a postage stamp collector. It would make your collection unique!

    • Letter signed by Stan Laurel - one half of comedy duo Laurel & Hardy
    • Written to news anchorman Glenn Laxton concerning Laurel's early career

Stan Laurel (1890-1965) is one half of legendary comedy duo Laurel & Hardy, who were extremely popular from the 1920s to the 1940s, and featured in over 100 films. Silly, slender Laurel and rotund, pompous Hardy captured the hearts of millions through their original, slapstick comedy.

This is a typed letter from Stan Laurel to cable television news anchorman, Glen Laxton, dated June 9, 1958. The letter, which features some hinges and archive folding, measures 11.8” x 8.4” and is accompanied by its original envelope which measures 6.75” x 3.75”

Laxton first contacted Laurel at the age of 15 offering his support following Oliver Hardy’s death. Laurel answered almost immediately and Laxton claims that since then, he received over 50 letters from the comedian. Click here to read an interview with Glen Laxton regarding his correspondence with Laurel.

This typed letter, written just 8 months after the death of Oliver Hardy reads:

    Dear Glenn:-

    Thanks yours 4th.inst.

My start in Show Bus. was due to the fact, that I was born of a Theatrical Family, so I just grew up in the profession & followed my Father's footsteps. No, I never appeared in a Circus, altho my Father owned at one time in England, and also operated 6 legitimate theatres, beside authoring & producing several Dramatic shows in which he appeared with my Mother - my Brothers & Sister too were in the business. I came to this Country in 1910 in a Vaudeville show with Charlie Chaplin, it was a troupe called Fred Karno's London Comedians, we had a repertoire of sketches, the most well known was titled "A Night in An English Music Hall".

Yes, Babe had a nice Tenor voice, he used to be a Boy Tenor in Minstrel Shows - Quartettes Etc. that deep voice you mention in "Way Out West" was not mine, a colored fellow sang while I just 'mouthed' the lyrics for comedy effect. I do'nt think seperate recordings were ever recorded of that particular number.

The TV reception is much better at the new place, we can get all 7 channels. Well, think this covers your questions, so bye for now.

    Regards & best wishes Glenn.

    Sincerely:- Stan Laurel

Laurel has autographed the letter “Stan” above his typed name.

American painter Grandma Moses (1860-1961) was discovered by the collector Louis Caldor. At the time, Grandma Moses was bartering paintings at the Women's Exchange during the Great Depression. Otto Kallir, an art dealer, put some of her work on display at his New York gallery, Galerie Saint-Etienne. The paintings were well received and went on to exhibit in Europe and Japan.

Grandma Moses only began painting later in life, as it was gentler on her arthritis-stricken hands than needlework. Self-taught, her art can be described as 'primitive' or folk art, disregarding strict perspective.

This rare candid photo of Moses, 3½" x 3½", shows the artist standing outside her home. The picture is autographed on the lower border in black ink, Grandma Moses. On the reverse, the item is stamped This is a Kodacolor Print, Made by Eastman Kodak Company…Week of Sept 24, 1951.

    • A superb piece of memorabilia from the heyday of the great British holiday

Founded by Fred Pontin in 1946, Pontin's was a major holiday operator within the UK throughout the 1960s. At its peak it had about 20 resorts throughout Europe. Pontins offered its guests lodgings, catering, entertainment and the chance to cheaply go abroad on one of its "Pontinental holidays".

Numerous entertainers performed, and continue to perform, at its resorts. Best known for his 1968 hit "Fire", the flamboyant singer Arthur Brown was hugely popular in the 1960s. "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" was both the title of his 1968 album and that of his band. His appearance at Pontins was likely in support of this album.

A colourful poster from 1968 details the headline act and supporting acts at Pontin's May Ball concert:

May Ball. May 1st, 8.00-3am, Pontins, Torquay. Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, Rod Masons Jazzband, Maurice Price and his Orchestra. Film King Kong, plus others. The strong outlines of an upwardly-gazing face are framed by the text "May Ball" in blue and red, which form the figure's hair. The neck and upper torso are composed of shaped lines of text; curved, arched and angled to fit the unusual design. The use of primary colours is accented by black and green.

    For Sale: £795.00

Rock and roll legend, Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley in 1936. His music is said to have inspired the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.

Holley signed to Decca Records in 1956. His name was misspelled “Holly” on the contract and Buddy adopted this misspelt version of his name for his music career.

Just four years after signing his first record contract, on February 3 1959, Buddy Holly died in a plane crash with fellow rock ‘n’ roll musicians Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. This date is often referred to as “The Day the Music Died”.

This is an application form for employment at The Texas & Texas Company measuring 11” x 8.5”. The form features some light staining and scuffing to the edges but otherwise in fantastic condition, especially considering its age.

Buddy Holly has printed his name “HOLLEY, CHARLES, BUDDY” in black ink but has failed to fill in any other information including position desired, address, details of education and practical experience.

Holly’s love of music was apparent from a very young age and at the age of just 5 he won a talent contest singing Have You Ever Gone Sailing (Down the River of Memories). It was most likely his aspirations of becoming a professional musician that prevented him from applying to this job.

An unusual piece of personal memorabilia from a pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll.
