Lord Horatio Nelson was a highly effective leader, inspiring both his superiors and his men with considerable courage, commitment and charisma, since dubbed 'the Nelson touch'. Nelson combined this talent with an adept grasp of strategy and politics, which made him a highly successful naval commander.
Nelson's greatest legacy remains success at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and the signal he sent to the fleet: 'England expects that every man will do his duty'. In command of the HMS Victory Lord Nelson led the British Navy to a crushing defeat of Napoleon's forces. Tragically, he was killed by a sniper just hours after the battle.
