The only 1930s Bugatti Type 51 to race in the US could speed to $4.5m

It's now just two short weeks until RM Auctions' Sports & Classics of Monterey sale, promising an assortment of outstanding classic motors cars for the discerning collector.

Among the confirmed highlights is this extraordinary Type 51 Works Grand Prix Racing Car, chassis no 51132 - rightly billed as one of the finest surviving Type 51s in existence.

What's more, according to RM, recent research by world-renowned Bugatti experts has revealed additional history...

Not only was 51132 a Grand Prix-winner, owned by the French racer Jean-Pierre Wimille and entered into 17 European GPS, it was also the only Type 51 to race in the US in the 1930s.

The Vanderbilt Cup and ARCA USA Grand Prix are among the historic events that this car has to its credit.

Retaining its original bodywork, engine gearbox and back axle, this sale is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime collecting and investment opportunity for Bugatti enthusiasts.

The car will be offered at auction on Saturday, August 14, 2010, and carries a significant estimate of $3,500,000-$4,500,000.
