Five exceptional "Battle of France" medals auctioned at Spink & Son on April 25 for £42,000 ($65,036) - a 81% increase on their £22,000 top estimate.
The group of five was posthumously awarded to flying ace JS Dewar of the Royal Air Force's 87th squadron, who, despite flying with a broken shoulder, was credited with at least five victories in 12 days while flying over France in 1940.

Dewar was killed in action on September 9, 1940. Having set out for RAF Tangmere in Sussex from RAF Exeter, Dewar's colleagues were surprised when he failed to arrive. For some time his fate was unknown until his body, riddled with shot, was washed up on the coast. It is thought he had encountered a German bombing raid near Southampton.
Dewar was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Order, the Distinguished Flying Cross, a 1939-1945 Star, an Air Crew Europe Star and an MID oak leaf War Medal, all of which were offered as a single lot in London on April 25.
