Francis Cadell's An Old Croft, Iona to lead Scottish art sale

Francis Cadell's An Old Croft, Iona is set to lead an auction of Scottish art at Bonhams Edinburgh.

The work is expected to make around £60,000-80,000 ($94,023-125,364) in the September 16 sale.

Francis Cadell Iona
Francis Cadell was a Scottish colourist painter

Cadell (1883-1937) was active among the Scottish colourist scene, which drew from impressionism and the rich Scottish landscape tradition.

He painted extensively on the Isle of Iona, which he first visited in 1912.

Like many of the colourists, his work fell into obscurity after his death but underwent a revival during the 1980s.

Bonhams comments: "This is an Iona view Cadell returned to again and again, looking over Cuil Phail croft to Ben Buie and the Ross of Mull.

"On this occasion, the funnel of the Dunara Castle provides a further spot of colour."

The record for Cadell's work stands at £553,250 ($855,380), set by Florian's Cafe Venice at Sotheby's in 2011.

John Smellie's In Summer is valued at £40,000-60,000 ($62,673-94,009).

The work was painted in Newport Sands on the Isle of Cumbrae in 1921 and is a strong example of Smellie's distinctive work.
