Helmut Newton's Tied-Up Torso headlines October 16 sale

Helmut Newton's Tied-Up Torso (1980) headlined a sale of photographs at Heritage Auctions in New York on October 16 - where it achieved $62,500.

The image, numbered two of an edition of 10, is among the artist's most recognisable works.

Helmut Newton is one of the most influential fashion photographers of all time

Heritage explained: "Newton was largely influenced by Surrealism, particularly the work of artists Man Ray, Paul Delvaux, and Hans Bellmer; the influence of which can been seen when we examine Man Ray's sculpture, 'Venus Restauree'.

"Newton's intentional employment of the natural afternoon sunlight in Saint Tropez dramatically highlights the contours of the female form in much the same way that the binding string does.

"Known for his provocative imagery, Newton's 'Tied-Up Torso' perfectly summarizes the confrontational nature and surrealist undertones of his collective body of work."

Newton's Sie Kommen (Naked) recently sold for $47,000 at Julien's Auctions.

Robert Mapplethorpe's Ada (1982) was another highlight, realising $40,625.

Along with his nudes, Mapplethorpe is perhaps best remembered for the X Portfolio, which whipped up a storm of controversy due its themes of homoerotic sado-masochism and bondage.

It was released shortly before he died from complications relating to AIDS in 1989.
