Naked Donald Trump statue auctions for $22,000

A statue of a naked Donald Trump has auctioned for $22,000 in the US.

The Emperor Has No Balls, created by street art collective INDECLINE, beat its $20,000 estimate at Julien's Auctions October 22 Street Art & Contemporary Art Fall Auction in Los Angeles.

A percentage of the proceeds from the Trump sale will go to the National Immigration Forum.

The statue was the only survivor of five naked Trumps that appeared across the US this August. It resided on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles where it caused mirth and wonder in equal measure; the rest were removed by park and city authorities.

The New York City Parks Department's Sam Biderman commented: "NYC Parks stands firmly against any unpermitted erection in city parks, no matter how small."

An INDECLINE spokesperson told the Washington Post before the auction: "Like it or not, Trump is a larger-than-life figure in world culture at the moment.

"Looking back in history, that's how those figures were memorialized and idolized in their time — with statues."

Keeping with the presidential theme, Knowledge Bennett's "Cojones Hillary Clinton, Gold" achieved $15,625.

The 2016 presidential contest has reached unprecedented levels of excitement for a US election - which explains the strong showing of both artworks.

Research by Paul Fraser Collectibles indicates Trump and Clinton's signed baseballs have more than doubled in value in the past three months. Both trade for around £500 ($600).

Banksy's V.I.P Rat was the top seller of the auction, achieving $87,500, while his Choose Your Weapon (Turquoise) made $32,000.
