The many sides to Picasso... Four-faced vase achieves $134,500

Pablo Picasso's fine ceramic work is often neglected by investors but Christie's recent sale may have helped to redress the balance.

The auctioneer's Picasso Ceramics: An Important Private Collection event on April 27 resulted in a white glove sale, achieving $1.8m in the process.

The top lot at the New York auction was the Spanish artist's Aztec Vase with Four Faces, 1957, which realised $134,500.

His 1953 earthenware vase Large Bird made $68,500 while another earthenware item from the same year, Vase with Two High Handles, achieved $60,000.

Christie's Tudor Davies commented: "The extremely passionate international bidding that took place in today's sale of Picasso ceramics was indicative of the tremendous desire for these exuberant works across the global market place as well as the undeniable appeal of a cohesive single owner collection."

Picasso was a master of many mediums, and produced a huge catalogue of work, some of which is available on the private market.
