An archive of 27 letters by Albert Einstein has made $420,625 at Profiles in History in Los Angeles.

The letters are highly personal and offer an insight into the life of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century.
In one 1949 example he discusses his view on religion: "I have repeatedly said that in my opinion the idea of a personal God is a childlike one.
"I prefer an attitude of humility corresponding to the weakness of our intellectual understanding of nature and of our own being."
In another he explains to his children his reasons for fleeing Germany in 1923: "I'm sitting here quietly in Holland after I was informed that there are certain people in Germany who are after me as a 'Jewish Holy Man'".
Joe Maddalena, chief executive of Profiles in History, commented in the run up to the sale: "We have amassed an extremely magnificent group of personal and profound handwritten Einstein letters covering a vast amount of subject matter.
"These letters depict his inner most views, offering intriguing content as only Einstein can. This collection is an embodiment of the physicist life's work."
