Charles B MacDonald designed the links at The National Golf Links of America in Southampton, Chicago Golf Club and The Mid Ocean Club. A founding member of the USGA, he was winner of the first US Amateur Championship in 1895.
He penned Scotland's Gift in 1928, which is now much sought after. But there are two editions, and one is more sought after than the other. The trade edition is moderately rare, but the limited edition, which ran to 260 copies, is more desirable.
The obvious difference is a gold slipcase in the limited edition. MacDonald's autograph also appears in it.
However, a copy of MacDonald's work - complete with a letter written by him in Bermuda - sold for $6,000 at a recent auction.
Considering copies sold for $8,625 and $11,400 in 2006 and 2008 respectively, and a copy with slipcase sold in 2008 for $13,800, it appears the buyer has got himself a bargain.
