Complete San Francisco Oracle set to auction at PBA Galleries

A complete 17-issue run of the San Francisco Oracle is the lead lot of a sale of countercultural artefacts at PBA Galleries on March 19 with a valuation of $7,000-10,000.

It includes five rare printing and colour variations.

San Francisco Oracle
The Oracle was produced by key figures in the San Francisco countercultural scene

The periodical was printed from 1966-1968 in the Haight-Ashbury district.

It was backed by Ron and Jay Thelin, owners of The Psychedelic Shop (an organisation providing information on drugs), and edited by poet Alan Cohen and avant-garde artist Michael Bowen.

It featured writing from some of the most notable figures in the counterculture, including Alan Ginsberg, Timothy Leary and Alan Watts and utilised experimental print techniques.

It closed in 1968, at the end of San Francisco's hippie heyday.

A poster for a Jefferson Airplane concert at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom in 1966 is valued at $2,500-3,500.

"The only credit it contains is that of the poster artists (Mouse Studios). There are very few of these silver inked originals, as they account for a small portion of the 1,000 run, pre-concert printing."

The piece was printed at The Psychedelic Shop and has remained in the possession of Ron Thelin since its closure in 1967.
