The Qur'an has passed through the hands of some powerful leaders in the Middle East

It's among the top lots of a sale of Islamic art at Christie's London on October 8.

Over the years it has passed through the hands of some powerful figures, including King Abdulaziz I of Saudi Arabia and former Iraqi prime minister Rashid 'Ali al-Gaylani.

Christie's explains: "The illustrious provenance of this Qur'an indicates the high esteem in which it has been held since its creation.

"As the only Qur'an thus far published by this famous calligrapher, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire an important example of Ottoman calligraphy."
