1936 Lagonda LG45R Rapide to make $3m at Goodwood Revival sale?

A 1936 Lagonda LG45R Rapide Sports-Racing Two-Seater, featuring coachwork by Fox & Nicholl, is the top lot of Bonhams' Goodwood Revival sale in the UK.

It's expected to make £1.4m-1.8m ($2.3m-3m) on September 13.

Lagonda Bonhams
The Lagonda LG45R Rapide was designed by WO Bentley

WO Bentley, founder of Bentley Motors, was responsible for the car's legendary engineering. He joined Lagonda in 1935, after Bentley was bought out by Rolls-Royce, and stayed with the company for over a decade.

The car, known as EPE 97, was one of four created especially for coachbuilders Fox & Nicholl - who had collaborated with Lagonda in racing events since 1929.

It was raced extensively between 1936 and 1960, holding its own against subsequent generations of racing cars right up until its retirement.

It last sold at Bonhams' Quail Lodge auction in California in 2008, where it made $1.3m.

The auction house described it then as "an enormously charismatic classical British sports-racing car which is extremely easy and rewarding to drive.

"It is capable of terrific open road performance by the standards of the time, and still surprises many drivers of modern motor cars today".

The sale will also include a spectacular 1930 OM 665 SS MM Superba.

We have this incredible racing jacket owned by legendary actor and racing enthusiast Paul Newman.
