1936 Vincent Series A Rapide breaks auction record

A 1936 Vincent Series A Rapide realised a record £262,080 ($325,868) in a sale of vintage motorbikes at H&H Classics on November 15.

That makes it the most valuable Vincent ever sold.

This is the world's most valuable Vincent

The Rapide was the fastest production vehicle available on its release in 1936. It was capable of maintaining speeds of up to 110mph.

The Series A is the original, and rarest, example of the Rapide model.

A total of 78 were produced between 1936 and 1939, of which around 50 survivors are known in varying states of repair.

The auction house described it as "an amazingly rare and original survivor having been carefully stored in recent years.

"Not only do the frame and engine numbers match but even the gearbox, oil pump and magneto numbers still conform to those on the original Works Order Sheet as does the colour of the tank."

A 1934 Brough Superior 680 Black Alpine realised £128,800 ($160,201).

The lot is an original matching numbers example of this much loved bike and has been in the same collection since 1955.

It has undergone a thorough restoration in recent years, which clearly enhanced its appeal to collectors.

The sale included a range of other bikes, including early Harley-Davidsons, classic 1980s Ducatti racers and a collection of original sidecars.
