1961 Jaguar E-Type Roadster to highlight April sale

A 1961 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Competition Roadster is to headline H&H Classics' April 20 sale in Duxford, UK.

The car is one of seven right hand drive E-types built to racing standard. It was one of two raced by John Coombs, who drove for the marque during the 1960s.

It was used mainly as a backup, with the result that it remains in excellent condition, but did enter a couple of significant races - including the 1961 Scott Brown Trophy.

Following its decommission as a racing car it passed through the collections of several owners.

As the auction house explains: "Sold off into private hands, '9 VPD' had not moved under its own power for fifteen years or so by the time that the current owner acquired it in July 2002.

"Conscious of the Jaguar's historical significance he entrusted it to marque specialist Beacon Hill Garage with instructions that they preserve as many original components as possible.

"…numerous 'surplus' parts were preserved for posterity including the original 'outside lock' bonnet, boot lid, doors, cylinder head, crankshaft, conrods, seats, close-ratio gearbox, hood frame etc."

Since then it has entered into several prominent events, including the 2006 Le Mans Classic.

It carries an estimate of £700,000-900,000 ($995,424-1.2m).
