1966 Ford GT40 Mk I to make $4.2m?

A rare road-legal 1966 Ford GT40 Mk I is among the highlights of RM Sotheby's Monterey sale.

The lot is one of only 31 examples of the Mark I model designed for use off the track and is expected to attract strong bids, with a valuation of $3.7m-4.2m.

The 1966 Ford GT40 Mk I is one of just 31 converted for road use

Ford used it for promotional purposes throughout 1967 before it was sold on.

It's one of six cars from the Jim Click Ford Performance Collection consigned to the auction, each of which has been tuned by master mechanic and ex-drag racer Don Roberts.

Jim Click is a Ford dealer turned racing driver whose collection is the stuff of legend.

Donnie Gould, RM Sotheby's car specialist, says "It's no surprise that the Click stable includes a GT40 - a true pinnacle in Ford performance.

"The key to this car is that it has been 'massaged' over the past 35 years to make it a fierce competitor.

"It's another example of a car within the Click Collection that Don Roberts has worked his magic on, creating one of the best GT40s that anyone could ever acquire and put on the race track."

A truly incredible line-up of classic cars will feature in the Monterey sale, including a 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Touring Spider.
