The 917K featured in classic movie Le Mans (1970)

This 917K, which featured in classic movie Le Mans (starring Steve McQueen), is valued at $13m-16m ahead of Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach sale on August 18-19.

The chassis (917-024) was driven during the pre-race tests at the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans. Later that year it was acquired by legendary Porsche team driver Jo Siffert.

Steve McQueen’s production company leased the car from Siffert for the duration of filming in the summer of 1970.

It’s clearly visible on screen at various points in the movie and was also used as a camera car.

Tragically Siffert died in an accident during the World Championship Victory Race at Brands Hatch in 1971.

His family sold off this Porsche to a collector, who placed it in storage.

It was rediscovered in 2001 and underwent a full restoration, including the repainting of its original, iconic blue and orange livery.

David Gooding, founder of Gooding & Company, said: "The Porsche 917 is among the most significant competition cars ever created and they remain highly coveted by knowledgeable enthusiasts worldwide.

“This example, with its fascinating history, iconic livery and exacting restoration, is among the most exciting racing cars that has ever come to public auction."
