1973 Porsche Carrera RS to make seven figures?

A legendary 1973 Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS lightweight rally car could make more than £1m ($1.3m) in a private sale at H&H Classics.

The lot was one of 17 lightweight versions of the 2.7 Carrera RS released in 1973, of which 15 are still around today.

Porsche Carrera RS
The 1973 Porsche Carrera RS was the subject of a hit song

It competed in 40 races in the UK and abroad. It took first place in three international meets during the 1970s - a better record than Porsche's own team - while being driven by Cathal Curley.

As a result of its success the vehicle featured in promotional material for the marque.

It's also perhaps the only Porsche ever to have had a song written about it.

It was the subject of the 1974 hit Hey CB, written by Irish songwriter Phil Coulter in honour of its extraordinary track record.

Dominic Lyncker, managing director of H&H Classics, says: "This car is the stuff of motor racing history and is one of the greatest Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS of all time."

It was damaged during an accident in a 1987 race in South Africa and subsequently retired until it was bought in 2010.

The car was painstakingly renovated over two years and has since been photographed in its original livery at each of the sites it achieved victory.
