1982 Porsche 956 crosses the block at $2.7 with RM Auctions

RM Auctions' Paris sale has seen excellent results for an array of competition cars, with a 1982 Porsche 956 Group C Sports-Prototype topping the 50-strong listing of classic motors.

The 956 is among the most acclaimed of all Porsche models

The sale was held on February 5 to coincide with Retromobile - France's most prestigious classic car event. The Porsche, the third overall finisher in the iconic Porsche 1-2-3 at the 1982 24 Hours of Le Mans, sold for $2.7m.

Classic Porsche models are riding high on the classic car market, with the HAGI P Index showing a gain of 1.3% in January.

A Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, raced by Dickie Stoop followed, selling at $1.7m.

Both cars were consigned from the Harburg Collection, a stable of important competition cars owned by Australian collector and race driver Peter Harburg.

The top lot from the Harburg Collection was a 1955 Jaguar D-Type, which sold for $4.9m to set a new world record for a D-Type at auction.

Ferrari 750 Monza Spider
The Ferrari enjoyed numerous wins at the hands of Phil Hill and Carroll Shelby, as well as finishing 5th in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1955

Also selling from the collection was a 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza Spider, driven by Phil Hill and Carroll Shelby, which made $2.6m.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a great range of Formula 1 memorabilia for sale, as well as actor and driver Paul Newman's racing jacket.
