Concours-winning Bugatti Type 43 to sell for $1.2m at Bonhams

A magnificent 1930 Bugatti Type 43 that has won awards at the illustrious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is the star lot of Bonhams' June 2 sale.

Bugatti Type 43
The winning bidder will be able to race their new purchase in the Le Mans Classic and Mille Miglia

The car will cross the block during the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance in New York with an estimated value of up to $1.2m.

Launched in 1927, Type 43 is one of Bugatti's most celebrated models, and was one of the first road cars to be offered with a top speed of over 100 mph.

The example at auction is exquisite. Boasting a supercharged eight-cylinder engine, it has been both cosmetically and mechanically restored to the highest standards by Jim Stranberg of High Mountain Classics, which earned it third place in its class at the 2006 Pebble Beach event.

The car has had a colourful history, flitting between European countries before ending up in the US in 1950. It has since passed through the hands of some of the most respected American collectors and is well documented by marque experts.

Such is the endurance racing heritage of the Type 43, it is now eligible for the more desirable retrospective events such as the Mille Miglia and Le Mans Classic.

Also featuring in the sale is one of only 29 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage Volantes, which was formerly owned by conductor Leonard Bernstein and will be sold with a $800,000-900,000 estimate.
