Important vintage motorcycles roll into Harrogate at $1.3m Bonhams auction

Bonhams Collectors' Motor Cars, Motorcycles and Automobilia sale in Harrogate on Wednesday (November 18) was a resounding success, making a grand total of £809,404 ($1,285,780).

The motorcycles section did particularly well selling 79% by lot and 86% by value to make £132,000 ($209,800). 

According to Bonhams, the saleroom was packed with a huge crowd of enthusiasts and collectors and it was a truly international sale with bidders from across the globe.


This 1926 Indian 600cc Scout sold for £16,560

In the end, the top selling motorcycle was a circa 1926 Indian 600cc Scout which exceeded its pre-sale estimate of £9,000-12,000 to sell for £16,560 ($26,320).

Elsewhere, a 1936 BMW 500cc R5 sold for £10,925, while a 1958 BSA 500cc Gold Star, which had seldom been used since its acquisition, brought £13,225 ($21,000).

Other notable lots included a 1919 Harley-Davidson 998cc Model F in very good condition that sold for £14,375 ($22,847) and also a beautiful and very unusual 1964 DMW 249cc Deemster Police Motorcycle. The DMW rolled to £4,370 ($6,945).


Elsewhere, a 1936 BMW 500cc R5 brought £10,925

"It was another fantastic sale at Harrogate - the 18th auction we have held here was as popular as ever," said Ben Walker, Head of Bonhams Motorcycle Department.

"The room was packed and enthusiastic bidding meant a successful sale. We're now looking forward to our next auction which takes place in Las Vegas in January."
