Mercedes-Benz Gullwing to make $1.8m?

A Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing is among the standout cars set to auction at Historics at Brooklands next month.

The 1955-made machine will arrive at the November 28 UK auction with a £1.2m ($1.8m) high estimate, its price boosted by its matching-numbers status.

Gullwing Brooklands
One of only 1,400 coupe Gullwings made

So named because of their roof-hinged doors, Mercedes Gullwings have historically sold well due to their great beauty and rarity - only 1,400 coupe versions were built.

One example - one of only 29 with an aluminium alloy body - auctioned for $4.6m in 2012.

This present example has a storied history, having resided in Europe, North America and Japan, and has an unusual "fire engine red" colour scheme.

"A wonderful example of the legendary car, this has a prominent history boasting solid ownership and an exciting colour combination," commented the auction house.

"It will undoubtedly receive invitations to many of the world's most prestigious motoring events."

It boasts a completely rebuilt engine and has been entirely recommissioned by 300SL UK-based specialists Templar and Wilde.

The November 28 auction will also feature several gorgeous Ferraris, including a 2012 599 GTB F1, which has a £280,000 ($426,335) estimate.

Also starring is a 1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II Roadster, which has a £73,000 ($111,152) valuation.
