Here's another highlight from Mecum's upcoming Kissimmee, Florida, US, sale on January 29, from back in the days when Lincoln-Mercury plunged into drag racing full force in 1964.
The firm contracted with Thunderbolt builders Dearborn Steel Tubing to build a fleet of 21 Comets for NHRA's new A/FX class.
Modifications included widening the shock towers and the upper control arm mounting points to accommodate Ford's mighty 427 CI High Riser engine, with a heavy duty 4-speed and 9-inch rear end to handle the power. Needless to say, this car will be a must-see for the gearheads present at Mecum's sale.
Fibreglass front fenders, hood, doors and front bumper helped trim the Comet's weight, an exercise furthered by stripping out the radio and heater and replacing the stock seats with the same light weight buckets seats used in the Thunderbolts.

Known as "Countdown 3," Mecum is offering a Detroit Steel Tubing-built factory A/FX lightweight 427 Comets - one of just 21 examples ever built.
According to the lot notes, this racer was driven by Jess Woodman and sponsored by Laughlin Miles Lincoln Mercury of Alton, Illinois, and comes with the original data tag with company DSO and manufacturing date of 12/31/6.
The car will appear for sale accompanied with extensive documentation from Lincoln Mercury Racing Division about the Comet Race Program.
