Reventlow Scarab Grand Prix racers to auction at Bonhams
A pair of Reventlow Scarab Grand Prix single seaters are to auction at Bonhams' Goodwood sale.

One 1959 specimen is valued at £700,000-950,000 ($1.1m-1.4m) ahead of the UK auction on September 12.

Bonhams Scarab Reventlow
The Scarab was created by Woolworth heir Lance Reventlow

The car was designed by millionaire racing enthusiast Lance Reventlow, heir to the Woolworth fortune.

It was the first US racing car to utilise a Chevrolet V8 engine, which placed it head and shoulders above the competition.

However, its superiority was extremely short-lived. By the time the 1960 Grand Prix rolled around, the other teams were utilising rear-engine cars.

James Knight, Bonhams' international motoring director, comments: "The Scarab team cars were fantastically quick, but unfortunately for Reventlow, not quick enough in their development.

"However, at events such as the Monaco Historic, and Goodwood Revival, the superiority of these front-engined projectiles has been absolutely demonstrated, time after time in recent years.

"These Scarabs are spectacular and beautiful Grand Prix cars with a proven race winning record at Historic motor racing events."

The sale will also feature a 1959-type model valued at £400,000-525,000 ($622,994-817,569), and a Scarab team transporter expected to make £600,000-800,000 ($934,365-1.2m).
