Unrestored 1956 Porsche 550 RS Spyder to star in Goodwood sale

An unrestored 1956 Porsche 550 RS Spyder will be among the star lots of Bonhams' Goodwood Revival sale on September 10.

Only 90 550s were built, making it one of the rarest sports cars of its era.

Unrestored examples are even rarer - in fact this may well be the last one.

All were constructed from aluminium and designed for speed. James Dean in particular was a big fan.

Indeed, Dean was driving his 550 when he fatally crashed in 1955.

Mark Osborne, Bonhams' vice president of motorcars, comments: "The 1956 Porsche 550RS Spyder offered is so original, that you could travel back in time 60 years and find it in much the same condition.

"It's exactly how a 550 would have looked, smelt and felt like when James Dean famously purchased his example back in 1955.

"Chassis number 550 0090 hasn't been thrashed around, it's been well looked after, and even won the FIVA award for originality at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 2010 - the perfect Porsche.

"A real time warp, and likely the last one left in such excellent, original condition."

The car is expected to sell for £4.7m-6.2m ($6.2m-8.1m), which would make it one of the most valuable Porsches ever sold at auction.

The record is $10.1m, set for an exceptional 956 last year.
