1879 flowing hair
The 1879 flowing hair is among the most sought after US issues

It's one of between 400 to 700 pieces struck in 1880 after the initial run of 15 originals, and is identified as such by a set of striations visible on its surface.

Heritage comments: "It exhibits delicate mint-green toning in the fields and lovely apricot colour on the design motifs.

"Most of the elements are sharply struck, except for the hair curls above the ear and forehead, and the surfaces reveal generally excellent preservation.

"Overall, this is a splendidly attractive example of the famous stella pattern issue, and one that should produce spirited bidding activity when it crosses the auction block."

Values for the variant remain high despite its status as the type coin of the series. Another $4 flowing hair stella sold for $194,000 at Heritage in September last year.

An MS64-graded 1796 draped bust quarter is likely to prove another highlight, with a starting price of $100,000.

In November last year the finest known 1796 quarter sold for $1.5m.
