One of the few pattern coins to be collected alongside regular issues.

The rare pattern dollar sold for $184,000, representing a 2.25% pa increase on the price achieved by another equally-graded example, which sold for $161,000 in 2006.

The 1879 $4 is one of America's most popular gold coins and is noted as one of the few pattern coins to be collected alongside regular issue examples. The PR64-graded example was a superb condition rarity, with only one finer example currently known.

Providing the second highest bids of the sale was a 1931 $20, graded MS66. The spectacular coin was one of the famed series designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of the premier American sculptors of his day.

The $20 Saint-Gaudens coins' production ran from 1907-1933 - they are widely considered to be the most beautifully designed of all US coins. The 1931 issue, of which Heritage's example was one of the finest known, is regarded as the second rarest of the series, following closely behind the 1930-S. The stunning condition ensured a final price of $120,750 for the coin.

Also from the Saint-Gaudens series was the 1907 $20 High Relief Flat Rim, which was the first coin to be designed by the sculptor. The exceptional coin, graded MS66, sold for $71,875.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a stunning new range of investment-grade coins on offer to investors. Our rare Italian Renaissance coin is one of just five examples known to exist.
