1893-S Morgan dollar to exceed $100,000 at Heritage?

An MS63-graded 1893-S Morgan dollar is expected to make more than $100,000 at Heritage Auctions.

The coin is set to lead the July 9-12 Summer FUN US Coins Signature Auction in Orlando.

1893 Morgan dollar
The 1893-S Morgan dollar is rare in Mint state

Heritage explains: "The 1893-S is well-known to claim the series-low regular-issue mintage of only 100,000 coins, and its status as the paramount key to the series has never been questioned.

"Yet, it is easy to lose sight of what makes this issue so special, especially when healthy numbers of lower-grade circulated pieces are exchanged frequently among dealers and collectors.

Simply, the 1893-S Morgan dollar is by a significant margin the rarest date in the series in Mint State."

Another 1893-S Morgan dollar with an identical grading sold for $149,000 at Heritage in 2007.

An MS63-graded 1803 large 3 half dollar is likely to prove another highlight, with a starting bid of $22,000.

Heritage says: "Draped Bust half dollars are highly sought-after in Mint State, but the vast majority of pieces in this grade range are from the 1806 or 1807 issues, and it is unusual to encounter an 1803 half in Uncirculated condition.

"The present Select example is one of only six Mint State Large 3 examples at PCGS, including two MS62, three MS63, and a single MS64 finer."
