1916-D Mercury dime to exceed $22,000 in December 7 auction?

An MS66-graded 1916-D Mercury dime (with full bands) is to lead Heritage Auctions' December 4-7 sale at the Houston Money Show with a $22,000 minimum bid.

The issue was minted in relatively low numbers and remains among the most popular US coins in existence, sought by casual and serious collectors alike.

Mercury 1916
The 1916-D Mercury dime is among the most desirable US coins

Heritage comment: "Between 1907 and 1921, during the Renaissance of American numismatic art, every U.S. coinage design from the Lincoln cent through double eagle was changed with a broad sweep of the brush -- 10 new designs in all from the Lincoln cent through Saint-Gaudens double eagle.

"It is no accident that some of these series are among the most popularly collected today, with the Lincoln cent, Buffalo nickel, and Mercury dime likely near the top of the list."

The reverse of the lot displays the fasces, a symbol of power and strength originating from ancient Rome that was co-opted by Mussolini during the 1930s.

An 1894-S half eagle is likely to prove another highlight with an identical starting bid of $22,000

The lot is an often overlooked San Francisco branch rarity that Heritage describe as "about on par with the equally rare but much more valuable 1854-O and 1856-O double eagles".
