73 years on: this is history worth saving

The only remaining German Dornier 17 bomber has been raised from the depths of the English Channel this week.

73 years after the RAF shot the aircraft down, its resurrection has received global attention - and brought back many memories, good and bad.

The Germans built more than 2,000 "flying pencils", renowned for their speed and agility.

The RAF Museum has parted with £600,000 ($933,100) to ensure that the only remaining example known in the world will not be lost forever.

There are several points to be made here.

Here is a prime example of the human connection that historical artefacts can provide.

This time-ravaged fuselage tells the story of the two Luftwaffe crewmembers who lost their lives on August 26, 1940, the two others who were captured, and the RAF Hurricane fighter pilot who shot it down.

It will also bring back haunting memories for the civilians who survived the German bombing raids during the conflict.

The expensive salvage operation also speaks of our enduring connection with the second world war. The will to ensure that the horrific losses and the bravery of the combatants are remembered for all time is strong.

And importantly from a collecting standpoint, this story also displays the determination of those of us with a passion for history to preserve the very rarest, most important artefacts.

It is a collecting ethos we hold dear here at Paul Fraser Collectibles. And it's one that we have kept sight of when assembling our portfolio of historical pieces for sale.

You can take a look at the many unique and rare pieces in our online store.

This is an opportunity to be the custodian of some of the world's most precious historical objects.

It is a privilege and a responsibility.

I hope you enjoy this week's newsletter.

Thanks for reading.
