First world war tablecloth to auction for up to $2,500

A tablecloth featuring the signatures of some of the most important figures of the first world war is among the highlights of a sale at Wright Marshall in Cheshire, UK on September 9-10.

It carries an estimate of £1,000-1,500 ($1,642-2,463).

Marshall WW1 tablecloth
Ethel Bailey, wife of Lieutenant Colonel Alfred John Bailey, made the tablecloth

The lot was made in celebration of the armistice and displays embroidered British, French, Italian and German flags over crossed swords.

There are a total of 170 signatures from allied commanders - including British field marshal Douglas Haig and United States commander Ferdinand Fosch.

Ethel Bailey, wife of Lieutenant Colonel Alfred John Bailey (7th battalion of Lancashire Fusiliers), made the piece shortly after the war ended in 1918.
