An archive of medals belonging to Frank Dwight Baldwin (1842-1923), a decorated Union army officer, has sold for $23,125 at Heritage Auctions.

Baldwin was the first soldier to be awarded the Medal of Honor in two separate conflicts

Baldwin joined the 19th Michigan Infantry in 1862 and fought until the end of the civil war in 1865, when he was conscripted into the regular army at the rank of second lieutenant - eventually working his way up to major general.

He was the first soldier ever to be awarded the Medal of Honor in two separate conflicts, once in 1864 and again in 1874 during the Indian wars.

Other awards in the collection include an Indian Wars Campaign medal, a Philippine Insurrection medal and an Army of Occupation Military Government of Cuba medal.

An 1865 field pass signed by Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S Grant and Edward Stanton was another highlight, achieving $20,000.

The pass is signed by Lincoln, Grant and Stanton

It allows Frederick Stanton, secretary to the British National Freedman's Aid Society, the freedom to travel between the contested territories of "Norfolk, Va., Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga. and return with transportation at half rates on a Govt. transport."

The Freedman's Aid Society was a British organisation predominantly comprised of Quakers that was set up to help freed slaves in the aftermath of the civil war.
