Major General Sir Robert Porter's medals brave Lockdales militaria auction

Lockdales of Ipswich in Britain are presenting another of their medals and militaria auctions at the end of this month, and as is often the case there are some gems to be found.

One of the key lots is a medal set which belonged to Major General Sir Robert Porter KCB.

Born in Co Donegal, he entered the RAMC in 1881, served in the Anglo-Ashanti wars in 1895/6 including the Capture of Coomassie (with an honourable mention).

He then served in the Boer War, and WW1 (he was Mentioned in Despatches six times, and promoted to Major General for distinguished service).

His honours include: Commander of the Order of the Crown and Croix de Guerre from Belgium and medals include an Ashanti Star 1896, Queen's South Africa medal with bars, King's South Africa medal with bars and a 1914 Star Trio with August-November Clasp.

The set is in rated as being in good-very fine condition, but despite minor chips to the enamel it is an absolutely beautiful set, and the estimate of £5,000-£5,500 ($7,700) seems a little low for the investment-grade group.

Lockdales' sale takes place on March 27th.
