1967 Disneyland 'Cursed Drinker' prop to auction on February 28

A 1967 Pirates of the Caribbean "Cursed Drinker" prop is to headline a sale of Disneyland memorabilia at Van Eaton Galleries in Sherman Oaks, California on February 28 and March 1.

The lot is valued at $60,000-80,000. It's one of hundreds of pieces from the park's history, many of which were personally owned by Walt Disney's brother Roy.

The auction house comments: "In what must surely be one of the most iconic images from the attraction, a skeletal pirate is forever locked in an eternal guzzle of ill-gotten spirits.

"The never-ending flow of wine pouring down his mouth and right through his empty torso, creates a magically graphic display. So well-known, the gag was recreated in a scene for the 2003, Gore Vorbinski feature film, 'Pirates of the Caribbean'."

It's the original model from the opening of the attraction, which is enduringly popular.

An original piece of concept art by Bruce Bushman for Tomorrowland is also likely to attract strong bids, with a valuation of $50,000-60,000.

The work was drawn up for Walt's 1954 Disneyland TV series, broadcast by ABC (a major backer behind the new theme park).

It's one of four images of different zones in the park that Bushman produced for the show and the only specimen in private hands.
