Clayton Moore's Lone Ranger costume to cross the block

A costume worn by actor Clayton Moore (1914-1999) in his role as the Lone Ranger will cross the block at A&S Auction in Waco, Texas on July 12.

The iconic outfit was designed by Nudio Rodeo Tailors and is sold alongside a pair of specially made Colt pistols and a buscadero holster.

Lone Ranger auction
Clayton Moore wore the outfit in the TV series of the Lone Ranger, which aired between 1949 and 1957

Each of the items will be auctioned individually in order, with the entire outfit then offered for a starting bid arrived at by adding each of the individual bids together - a custom referred to as "sold on the whole".

Auctioneer Scott Franks explained: "If there are no bids at that point, then each of the four individual lots will be considered sold for whatever the hammer prices were.

"Otherwise, the bidding will continue in normal auction fashion for the whole kit and caboodle. It's a way of enabling the outfit to remain intact, if possible."
