Great Collections - The Dreier memorabilia collection

Part one of the famous Dreier collection is set to come to auction in July, the first instalment in a sale that will take nearly two years to complete.

The vast scale of this important collection means that the items will be spread across several auctions, which are to be held in California.

Father and son collectors, Chad and Doug Dreier, have amassed one of the greatest collections of movie and sports memorabilia in existence, featuring the finest rarities from both collecting worlds.

The collection grew from Chad's love of baseball cards to a multi-million dollar investment, following his progression to CEO of Ryland Homes, one of America's biggest building companies. Chad soon recruited his son, Doug, to manage the collection while he concentrated on the business.

"Our family has been honored to house these treasures over the last 15 years, and now it is time to share them with the hobby," said the pair on the auction.

Highlights of the monumental offering include the most important collection of Christopher Reeve Superman memorabilia in private hands. Featuring a classic Superman costume, the sale will finally allow bidders to transform themselves from Clark Kent into the world's best-loved hero.

One of the most iconic stage costumes ever worn by Michael Jackson is expected to draw huge bids from the singer's loyal fans. The leather outfit was worn during the 1988 Bad world tour, which set two Guinness World Records for the largest grossing tour and also the largest audience.

Chocolate lovers will be awestruck with the Dreiers' sumptuous selection, which will be offering the most significant Willy Wonka memorabilia collection in existence. The star of this section will be the original Gene Wilder costume from the 1971 film, which is estimated to sell at $80,000-120,000.

Last but certainly not least is the collection's T206 Honus Wagner baseball card, which is one of the finest known examples, graded PSA VG-EX 4. Renowned as the most expensive baseball card ever sold, a Wayne Gretzky owned edition of the Honus Wagner made $2.8m in 2007.

Paul Fraser Collectibles will be bringing you more from this sale soon. Be sure to check back with us for the latest news.
