It isn't just rock memorabilia attached to legends from previous decades that can inspire fierce bidding...

Contemporary acts can trigger online bidding wars too.

A guitar signed by Teignmouth (United Kingdom) rockers Muse has so-far topped £2,000 in an eBay auction, and its value is rising fast.

The mosaic guitar is actually an artwork by Michelle Wilcox, entitled The Resistance. It uses the cover design of Muse's hotly anticipated new album of the same name as its motif.

Currently, the highest bid stands at £2,450, with 32 having been made so far. The guitar reached its reserve price within 45 minutes of the bidding opening.

The auction closes on Wednesday at 9pm.

Proceeds from the sale will go to the Helen Foundation, founded by Roger and Annie Kirk, in memory of their daughter Helen, who died aged 24 after a car crash on Boxing Day 2005.

"This is a unique item — Michelle will not be making any more guitars based on this album cover" said Mr Kirk.

The item has been donated by Mansons guitar shop in McCoys Arcade, Fore Street, Exeter. It was on display in Voetstoots Gallery, Teignmouth while the supergroup performed on The Den last weekend.

Mr Kirk said: "The guitar had pride of place on the Helen Foundation stall during the Muse concerts and attracted a great deal of admiring attention.

"Altogether, including donations kindly given at the concerts, the foundation benefited from the event by over £7,000.

"This will enable the foundation to offer improved levels of support to schools and young people in Teignbridge in the year ahead," said Mr Kirk.

Music memorabilia continues to be a vastly popular area of collecting and investing.
