Stunning Star Trek collectibles beam down into Propworx's sci-fi auction

Star Trek continues to fascinate collectors, whether it's Gene Roddenberry's original Apple Mac computer, Captain Kirk's uniform or Mr Spock's ears (owned by Ben Stiller), its legacy isn't going anywhere, boldly or not.

The Propworx Star Trek Prop and Costume Auction will take place on Saturday, June 4 and continuing until all 257 lots are sold.

The auctioneer has brought together 257 fantastic screen-used props, costumes, set pieces, concept art and crew gifts in this landmark auction. Several may make excellent alternative investments.

Included is a Star Trek TOS (the original series) red uniform dress worn by actress Celeste Yarnell. A matte painting from Star Trek TOS episode Menagerie, Part 1 will also be featured in the auction and has drawn significant interest from collectors worldwide.

The spectacular matte painting features the landscape of Starbase 11, where the crew beams down to in the first act. These paintings were used by filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that would otherwise be too expensive or impossible to build or visit.

The Starfleet issue red dress was worn by Yeoman Martha Landon, played by actress Celest Yarnel, in the original series season two episode The Apple.

Models are highly desirable among Star Trek collectors. A fine example at the Propworx auction is a custom-built model of an early design concept for the starship Excelsior in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock.

This model was built at Industrial Light and Magic during a planning for Star Trek III. The model was later filmed as wreckage for the "starship graveyard" scene of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, The Best of Both Worlds, Part II.

Weaponry will also be featured at the auction, including a Starfleet issue phaser rifle made by production for the motion picture Star Trek: First Contact. This is one of the two types of rifles used in the movie and features working LEDs on the power display, working light on the top section of the rifle and removable side panel with working red LEDs. This item was made by production but not used on screen.

Another highlight is a tricorder used in the motion picture Nemesis. This version of the medical device was introduced in Star Trek: First Contact and used again for the last Next Generation film.

It is missing its metal hand scanner, but features fully functional sequencing lights activated by a magnetic reed switch on the door. The device shows minor wear from production use.

Sci-fi memorabilia collectors more interested in Wars that Treks should take a look at these pieces of Krayt Dragon bone from the original Star Wars: A New Hope film.
