Superman memorabilia auction coming to Profiles in History

Profiles in History will host a major auction of Superman memorabilia next month.

Original comic books, movie props and rare merchandise dedicated to the Man of Steel are all set to feature.

Superman made his debut in Action Comics #1 in 1938, making him the world’s first superhero.

Action Superman 7

Superman was the world's first superhero

But he was actually created five years earlier, in 1933, by aspiring comic book writer Jerry Siegel and budding artist Joe Schuster. Both were just 19 at the time.

They sold their creation to National Allied Publications (later to become DC Comics). It would spawn an entire genre.

Profiles is offering a hugely rare CGC 7.0-graded copy of Action Comics #1, one of around 100 known to exist.

Of these, only six are graded above CGC 4.0.

The sale represents a rare opportunity for collectors. It’s expected to make around $1.2m when it crosses the block on December 19.

The best known copy, a 9.0-graded specimen, sold for $3.2m in 2014.

Superman has been represented on screen countless times and a wealth of memorabilia from these TV and movie adaptations is offered, including the outfit Christopher Reeve wore in Superman III (valued at $50,000-70,000).

Perhaps more so than any other superhero, Superman has featured on what can only be described as an avalanche of tat.

These pogo sticks, swimming goggles and other gewgaws will also have huge appeal for collectors.
