The lot will star in a sale held in collaboration with TCM titled Treasures from the Dream Factory. The auction will take place in New York on November 23.

It formerly belonged to Monroe's co-star Debbie Reynolds, who bought it from the production company in 1971.

Bonhams' head of entertainment, Catherine Williamson, told the Daily Mail: "This is a grey travelling suit that Marilyn Monroe wears for a long period of time in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

"In the movie the characters played by Monroe and Jane Russell go on a shopping spree in Paris and she wears the outfit in this scene.

"It's a long song-and-dance sequence where the two realise they've been financially cut off from their patron and she wears it throughout."

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was Monroe's breakout movie and turned her into a household name.

The outfits worn in her various films are among the most sought after pieces of memorabilia in the entire industry. In 2011, the iconic "subway dress" she wore in The Seven Year Itch sold for a film memorabilia record $5.6m.

We have this incredible Marilyn Monroe signature for sale.

The sale features a wealth of memorabilia from throughout the history of Hollywood, including a Dorothy dress worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz.
